Seiichi Nishihara

Received the B.Eng. and Ph.D in 1968 and 1978, respectively both from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. Soon after graduating Dept. Applied Mathematics and Physics, Kyoto University, he became a research assistant of The Data Processing Center, Kyoto University. In 1975, he moved to University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan, as an assistant professor. In 1991, he became the professor of N-PAL(Non-numerical Processing Algorithms Laboratory), Dept. Computer Science, University of Tsukuba.
He is now a professor emeritus of University of Tsukuba. From 1982 through 1983, he stayed at Virginia Tech as a visiting researcher, where he started his research on the constraint satisfaction problem under the supervision of Professors Robert M. Haralick and Linda G. Shapiro.

His research interests now include developing combinatorial search algorithms, applying knowledge-base to understanding engineering drawings, studying heuristic and statistical problem solving methods, CG & CAD, and research of general constraint satisfaction paradigm as well. He has published eleven books on data structures and algorithms, computer graphics, image processing, pattern analysis and recognition, etc. Further, he has published 4 books on mountaineering with his colleagues, too. He is a member of ACM SIGGRAPH, IPSJ(Japan), Art and Science Society, where he is now the director.
