Abstruct:

A cutting plotter, which grasps a blade by a pen carriage, is used for cutting a sheet of paper. Although the direction of the blade changes automatically according to the cutting path, the blade may hook the paper and causes a paper jam. Since a paper jam significantly affects the quality of the cutting, an adhesive sheet and electrostatic adsorption are used to prevent movement of the material. In this paper, we note that a paper jam occurs when the tension caused by the blade is not resisted by the paper, and we show how to predict the occurrence of paper jams, based on the geometry of the cutting shapes. Further, we show that paper jams are avoidable by selecting an appropriate cutting order, even when only the border of the sheet of paper is fixed. We propose an algorithm for finding a jam-free paper-cutting path. We evaluate our algorithm with experiments and show its effectiveness.
